Polls show game on for Labour

A series of polls over the weekend should give heart to all Labour activists. The Tories' lead is continuing to shrink to single figures when they need at least an 11 point lead to have some confidence of victory. YouGov, one of the most respected polling organisations, now put the Tory lead at just 7 points.

And why? Well, the more they have to reveal their hand the more they change their minds. Up until this morning they were talking of deep and immediate spending cuts. This morning they told the Today programme they would be more gentle. But what with they say this afternoon or tomorrow?

By contrast Labour has been consistent and clear that the recovery needs to be locked in. So, government needs to continue to invest in jobs and skills, supporting businesses and families and keeping people in their homes. Changes to the tax system will mean those who can afford it, and have benefitted over the years, should pay more but getting people into work remains at the heart of maintaining the recovery. The commitment to halving public sector debt financed through growth is the subject of legislation not just a manifesto pledge.

The Tories keep changing their minds but are committed to deep and draconian spending cuts and tax breaks for the rich. Maybe not today, but soon and for the rest of the parliament if they get in. They want to say anything to get votes but shirk away when the tough decisions are called for.

Remember they have called it wrong on every occasion since the banks caused the recession. They have opposed all the measures taken by Labour, including tax changes and deferrals and extra spending. They can't even get it right on their own policies. Today it was David Cameron on public spending. Last week it was William Hague who, having castigated Labour for the VAT tax cut, then castigated Labour for restoring the full VAT rate.
